Evening guys! I’ve been up to something a bit different today.
With the recent addition of the floating dungeons and player spawns, I spent my day building a rough prototype for what our missions could be like. The objective was for me to create a level for players to move through from start to finish, with environmental hazards and enemies to fight. The main objective of this test was to assess how long I would need to produce a mission, so we can gauge precisely how many polished missions we could create in time for 1.0, and to highlight any issues we may run into.
When I say the prototype is rough, I mean super rough. I didn’t spend any time dressing it up visually, since it’s just for testing and it only involved me using randomized monsters for now, which means no configuration of behaviours or dialogue as there would be when using humanoid NPCs. I ended up using the glitch dungeon files as the base for the mission.
For my test playthroughs, I would attempt to get through it repeatedly with a tier 1 broadsword, shortsword and shield, 10 bandages, and my starting clothes. It would typically take me anywhere between 10-15 minutes to get through in one go (without dying).
The game offers a Terraria like experience with players exploring procedurally generated worlds in a 2D fashion. Starbound takes the genre into an entirely new level though by taking place over an entire universe. Players are no longer limited to a single world with the option to pack up their belongings and jump to an entirely new planet that promises a different experience to the last.
In addition to exploring players also have the opportunity to choose a unique race, craft, fight and much more. This entire experience is only made more fun by the drop in multiplayer that lets you team up with friends.
SCREENSHOT
Starbound is an action/exploration game that's strongly reminiscent of Terraria (not surprising since both games share the same developer), the biggest difference being that Starbound takes place in space. You'll survive and explore the infinite space from planet to planet, find rare materials, and fuel for your ship to gradually become a person who has a real place in the galaxy
That's the beauty of Starbound: you come out of it with all sorts of anecdotes you'll want to share with people. This might be a bare-bones version of the game to come, but boy, check out those bones. The game's minutiae will be mapped out across various wikis for years to come, and many mechanics will be added and refined, but even now, Starbound is an enticing journey of discovery that reminds you just how exciting it can be to stare at a sky full of stars
The game allows you to play solo or in co-operation mode with your friends. There are also competing modes available. Each generated planet has its own unique code, which we can share with the entire community of players and thus enable them to explore it. There is also the option of making any planet our home. After doing that, completely new possibilites open up before the player, among which we find terramorfing of the area, erecting structures (e.g. weather control center), and bringing colonists who are, in fact, previously met characters. Of course, the people of our new home have their own needs and do not hesitate to ask us for help in satisfying them

The future of Starbound
The following is a collection of some of the broad changes coming to Starbound in terms of progression. Not included are smaller self contained features like ship upgrades, vehicles and so on.
Progression As it stands, almost the entirety of the progression in Starbound is temporary. Built quickly to enable some basic gameplay during beta.
The final game will be structured differently.
The current 10 tiers of gameplay will all play out on the same Starmap, with each tier introducing hazards that can only be overcome by progressing through the previous tier and completing a mission at the end of each tier.
To access a mission at the end of each tier you need to obtain a certain number of pixels.
An example of this progression would be:
Play through tier 1 and gain enough pixels too.. > access the tier 1 mission > fight tier 1 boss > gain oxygen tank tech > now able to access tier 2 planets with non breathable atmosphere
Obtaining Pixels Obtaining pixels will be key to progressing through Starbound. To access the mission in each tier you must first gather a certain number of pixels.
